Thanks to John B for taking the photographs and to Gene for putting them on the web-site.

The Pawnee will be a great addition to the club.  The 260HP engine will be a joy to tow behind.  The Grob 102 will get up to 3000 feet in about 3 minutes.  It has the power to pull the Twin Astir out of Coastal with plenty of margin.  It is a very easy airplane to fly.  It has great visibility and we can take off the windows to keep the towpilots cool.

The Scout is and has been a faithful towplane for many years.  But at 180HP, it lacked the power to comfortably make take-offs on hot days with a fully loaded Blanik.

Pawnee’s rarely become available and when they do, they are usually bought up very quickly.  They have shown the soaring community throughout the years that they are the best platform for the task they are asked to do.

The Pawnee came from Franconia Soaring in northern New Hampshire.  They had a change of leadership and they wanted an L-19 for a number of reasons.  They believed that the Pawnee would sell easily in the $50K range.  I quite frankly did also.  However, every call they received said $48K was too much, how about…  They were anxious to sell the Pawnee.  When I contacted them about the Pawnee, they basically said “$40k and it’s yours”.  Ralph entered the negotiations and quickly reached an agreement for $37K.  We offered the Scout to Don Bonner’s banner service and came to an agreement at $49K.

$12K seems like a good take, however, we have to pay FL sales tax on the Pawnee (anyone know how to make us a non-profit?), and we have to budget $2500 for the tail AD that has to be complied with within a couple of years.  This leaves us about $7000, most of which will be seed money for the engine overhaul, that will be on us in about 4 years.

I think we are very fortunate.  The Blanik AD situation looking dire and we need to move relatively quickly to get a different two-place online to keep us going.  This towplane allows us the opportunity to obtain almost any two-place we desire and can afford.
